The lock represents how the school is locked in place. It’s surprising to see how the school is still there since the 2013 school closing. This large area and building could be used for other things such as a community center or community park. When I was there I witnessed how the school and playground was being abused. There was loads of trash in the area and sections of the playground were destroyed.
The words “Stay Alive” introduces the idea that the schools won’t be forgotten by the community, the kids that went to Overton, and the people that live in the neighborhood. It demonstrates how people were affected by the closing of Overton and the feelings of sadness and mournful still haunts them when they see the school.
